Abstract

The Internet, email and mobile communication devices are indispensable today. This study
examined the possible effect between the after-hours mobile technology use by employees’ and work place
fatigue experienced by employees’. It identifies the effective implications for society of emerging mobile
technologies such as mobile telephones, laptops, 3G and SMS. Emerging technologies and increased demand
for worker productivity during lean economic times have changed the way employees’ work. Today,
employees routinely check their smartphones at all hours for emails, text messages, voicemails, and other
electronic transmissions. The modern workplace includes anywhere within range of a wireless signal. The
collected data in this study were explored by the statistical method of multiple regressions. While the number
of responses was not high enough to determine statistically significant differences, the data did not show a
strong correlation between after-hours mobile technology use and workplace fatigue experienced by student
affairs professionals. Employees are provided with Internet access and electronic communications services
(which may include, but are not limited to, computers, e-mail, cell phones, iPhones, iPads, PDAs, personal
computers and the like) as required for the performance and fulfillment of job responsibilities. All employees
are obligated to make effective, safe and responsible use of this technology.
